Thanks to an organised waste recycling system, Germany is rated as one of the most environmentally friendly countries.
German citizens throw away ten kilograms of waste monthly, which is 50% less than the amount the country generated since 1985.
Recycling is not only an expectation but a habit, which is accepted by everyone.
The German recycling system has different bins classified according to colour, pictures or names by which you can identify how to sort your waste.
The yellow is for plastics and soft metal
The blue for paper and cardboard
The white for clear glass
The brown/green for organic and bio produce
The grey or black bin for residual waste (other trash, sanitary products)
Batteries, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes cannot be placed in any of these bins and must be taken to special recycling points.
Pfand system is how you can earn back your deposit (8-25 cents per each) when you buy glasses (except for wine) and plastic bottles of drinks. People are able to return them to stores or automated machines. The containers are found in the busiest areas, where you can leave the bottles. This helps the environment as well as people to obtain some sum of money and not discourage them by searching through the bins.
