Grocery stores have a variety of foreign and local produce. You can find grocers from Späti (open until late, sell mainly drinks, alcohol and snacks) to wholesalers (everything can be found there).
– If you prefer fresh produce, then buying at the weekly market is a suitable option. Almost every town has local supermarkets and a weekly fair. At many weekly markets, you can not only shop but also drink coffee while chatting and having a meal at a food truck (plus there are many free samples )
– Alternatively, you can shop online without waiting in a queue and riding shopping carts. There are delivery services of chain stores or delivery apps (Gorillas)
– In case you are not a fan of cooking or do not have time, then “Hello Fresh” is a great option. They offer ready-made packages of fresh food so that you are able to make your meals quickly.
– If you like international or gourmet products, big supermarkets or international stores are the best.
– Many germans do shopping in supermarkets like Lidl, Netto and Aldi. These are discounters, which are preferred by citizens, so at peak times, these might be crowded and have long lines. Be aware of it.
– Large grocery stores (Real, Edeka, Kaufland and Rewe) provide a wide range of produce. The products are of really high quality, however, the prices are higher than at discount stores. The good news, such stores are less crowded.
– Suppliers like DM and Rossmann offer everything for hygiene and body care.
You would find them in any town in Germany.
– If you’re in Frankfurt, then we recommend visiting Kleinmarkthalle. This market is spread over 1500 square metres. You can purchase fresh and gourmet products, drinks and decorations. If you are interested in regional specialities (for instance, Frankfurt’s Green Sauce) delicacies, then this place is a must-go.
Please notice!
– Plastic bags are not sold in Germany
– It is better to bring your bags! Otherwise, you will have to buy cloth ones.
– On Saturdays, there are often limited opening hours
– On Sundays, most stores are closed, so plan your shopping time wisely.
